| Different manufacturers,
models and vintages of any automobile will have a
variety of characteristics that can make one
considerably better suited to a particular purpose than
another. This is true of individual Porsche's as
well. And the result can be a wide disparity
between autocross competitors that has little to do with
the driver's skill.
For example, a long and relatively straight course that allows a turbocharger
more time to spool up might benefit a 944T while
a short, tight course might provide a
conventionally-aspirated Boxster with the
relative advantage.
In an attempt to level
the playing field somewhat, to encourage friendly
competition, and to make autocross awards more
representative of driver skill, Polar Region has grouped
the following models into distinct classes as
follows:
Class 1 includes 356, 914, 924,
924 Turbo, 944, 944 S2, 944 Turbo, 968, 928,
928S, 928S4, 911S, 911SC, 911 Carrera, 911 Turbo (up to 1990), 930.
Class 2
includes Boxster, Boxster S, 911C2, 911C4, 911C4S, 911RS America,
911 Turbo (1991 and later), 993, 996.
Class 3 includes
cars of all models and vintages with R-compound tires or
that are race prepared and/or heavily modified.
With
the adoption by Polar Region of the PAX handicapping
beginning in the 2003 autocross season, however, the
above class system will no longer be used. »article
